Hello, my son (17 in two weeks) recently received a private diagnosis - we have yet to see the private psychiatrist to discuss meds but we intend to. The private provider said we needed to ask our GP to do vital measurements and a cardiac assessment. On Friday we went to the GP for the vital measurements (ECG in 10 days). The GP said the practice are not doing shared care but they would support RTC. My question is- under RCT do you always need a re-diagnosis (not a problem), or can they pick up the titration? Should we press on with the private titration and simultaneously ask for RTC? Or should we pause on private titration to see what the RTC provider says. Thanks !
Hi, thanks for sharing. It depends on the service and a right to choose provider may accept a private ADHD diagnosis and continue care (‘transfer of care’), but they may also require a reassessment before they will prescribe or take over treatment. Right to Choose referrals can be made at the same time as accessing private treatment or assessment.
The link below has more information on the Right to Choose pathway, including information about restrictions based on your local area, with some local integrated care boards (ICBs) currently having restrictions in place for right to choose referrals and the amount they will let each approved provider take over a period of time.
Hopefully the below will be a helpful read and do feel free to post any questions that you might be left with ![]()
